Be honest: the last time someone told you to listen to a podcast, what was your response? Did you lie and say you’re too busy so you wouldn’t have to admit that you don’t really know how to listen to podcasts?
If that’s the case, you’re not alone. Edison Research has found that 48 percent of people who do not listen to a podcast don’t even know how to do so.
That’s why we’ve created this step-by-step guide to show you how to find, subscribe, and review a podcast.
But before we get to that, let’s make sure we’re on the same page about what a podcast is: it’s a digital audio show that is distributed through the Internet via something called an RSS feed. RSS stands for real simple syndication, meaning it’s a code that can distribute information across multiple channels.
Now that you’re up to speed, here’s how you can find a podcast on any popular device:
On an iPhone
Have you ever said, “I don’t even have a podcast app,” when someone asked you to download an episode? Turns out, you probably do. On the iPhone, Apple Podcasts comes standard. It’s that purple icon that looks like it has a stick figure person with a halo on it.
When you open the podcast app, you can go to “Browse” to see what’s being featured or what’s popular under different categories. Or you can click search to look for shows with specific keywords. Try searching for our show, “Deciding by Data.”
On your iPhone, click here to open Deciding by Data directly through the Apple Podcasts app. If you’re on your desktop, it will open up in iTunes.
On an Android phone
Android phones now also have a podcast app pre-installed. As long as you have enabled Google Play on your phone, you should also have the new Google Podcasts app.
Even if you’ve uninstalled the app, you can open a podcast directly on your Android device using a direct link. Try it out by opening up this link to Deciding by Data on your Android device.
Other podcast apps you can use on any device (including desktop)
You’re not limited to the apps that are pre-installed on your phone. Here are some of the most popular podcast players out there.
How to Rate and Review
Now that you know how to listen to podcasts, there is one thing you can do to give back to the people making your favorite shows: rating and reviewing the show. This helps build credibility for the show and helps viewers like you find new podcasts to try.
On Apple Podcasts, and most podcast apps, look for the “Ratings and Reviews” section of the podcast page. You can click on the number of stars you want to rate the show, and click the “Write a Review” button to leave a more detailed reaction to the show.
